Bright shapes

In my last post, I talked about doing some planned color pooling. Well.....that wasn't gonna work.

What I didn't notice at first is that the colors in this Red Heart Stripes don't go through the colorway and then repeat, they reverse. Now, that could come out really good looking if I wanted to make a queen size afghan - which I might do someday - , but I was looking more for a scarf, table centerpiece, or even baby blanket. I'm just not in the mood to do something so large. With the way the colors reverse, the plaid pattern would need to be REALLY big and wouldn't show at all on something so small. Oh well. At least I picked up on that as I was winding it, rather than after I had gotten a few inches into a project.

It's alright though! When one idea doesn't work out, it often leads to better ones! Also, now I learned what to keep an eye out for while looking for yarn to do that with.

When I caked up the yarn I noticed something else about it - this yarn is BRIGHT!

RedHeart yarn

I mean like REALLY BRIGHT!!!

Of course I knew that when I bought it, but it didn't show it's true vibrancy until I caked it up.

Isn't it great?! Best part is that I was using it and taking these pics during a power outage with nothing but rainy, stormy, nasty weather lighting! It certainly made it much easier to crochet in the dimness haha.

Anyway, with the color pooling not working out, it was time to just play around and make some blocks of some sort. I had seen this kind of shape somewhere online before, but didn't want to waste precious phone battery looking for it, so I played around a while and came out with this.

What would you call this shape?

vintage glass ornaments

It looks like an old Christmas ornament to me! I think I'll make some in reds and greens.

crochet in progress.

Here's the yarn with some of my mess and super cute black kitty pj's. It practically glows.

Alright! Enough obsessing over the brightness!

The shapes will be joined like this. I'm joining as I go to make the strips. I'm really loving the color changes. When I try to "randomly" make blocks, it never works. I spend too much time thinking about every color I pick up. This yarn has a great length of color runs. Long enough to keep things changing and not bunching up and becoming mottled, but short enough to ensure at least 2 colors per block.

teardrop granny blocks.

I really need a name for this block. If you have any suggestions, let me know! For now, I think I'll call it "Tessellating Grannies". It might stick unless you give me something better!

I WILL be making a pattern for it, as well as figuring out some half-blocks for the ends.

So, what is all this hard work for? Yarn-bombing of course!! I have this telephone pole across from my driveway that needs some brightening up. People always miss my driveway even though the mailbox is yarnbombed. This will be up higher and easier to see coming over the hill. I've been meaning to make something for it since we bought the house, but nothing really jumped out as being "it" until the first strip of this block.

boring utility pole.

Even the woods are boring now that the 90mph winds from the storm the other day blew most of the leaves away! Usually by the time there's no color on the trees in Maine, there's snow making the branches look pretty.

Time to make more blocks! Hopefully in the next couple of days I'll have it hung :)
