2018 Temperature Blanket pt.2

In my last post, I shared how I was starting a Temperature Blanket. I wasn't sure yet how I was going to put it together, I just knew I wanted to make blocks instead of stripes.

I jumped right in and make the first and second blocks. They came out at a little under 4 inches. If I blocked them, they'd be 4. I'm not gonna bother blocking. This will be a very "organic" project. I usually don't like when things don't line up right, or look "messy" when I'm done, but since this is a year-long day-by-day project, I'll let it go whatever way it goes.

With the first block done, I decided to put the year on it, because I'll make a new blanket every year. I'm already obsessed with it and thinking about next years layout!

I'm just whip-stitching the blocks together. Day 2 wasn't a very exciting looking block. I think some of the squares will end up being something more than a basic granny.

Day 3 just absolutely needed a big sunshine on it. It was sooo bright and sunny that while driving I kept reaching for my sunglasses, forgetting that I was already wearing them hahahaha.

I have no previous experience with embroidery. I'm just figuring it out as I go along. I've done plenty of cross-stitch, but that's not the same. I'm really enjoying the creative process with this blanket. It's nice to mindlessly reflect on the day and just let the yarn flow through my fingers. I seriously have nothing in mind going into this other than following the temperature colors and adding any memorable weather.

Now came the math....and I messed up.

Guess what isn't evenly divisible by any number that makes sense for a blanket? That's right...365.

It's only divisible evenly by 5 and 73. A 5x73 block blanket? Ummm...nope. Not gonna work.

Ok. my choices are to add a bunch of blocks to make another row so I can get all 365 in, or to just do it with only 364 and leave off the last day. I don't like that idea. I might just do a diagonal block for the last one, like the last day on the calender sometimes.

You know, like one of these.....only smaller.

Well, I have most of a year to figure that problem out. No worries. I only have to decide whether I want this to be 13 x 28 or 14 x 26. I have another week before I have to decide on that too! Haha, why worry now. My blanket will let me know how it wants to look. That might sound a little crazy to some people, but the yarn really does "talk" to me. A lot of artsy people will agree.

Yesterday's block is really pretty. We had a blizzard, so I pulled out some old sparkle crochet thread...I mean OLD...the store this came from hasn't existed here for over 20 years....

And a tiny size 9 steel hook.....

Ugh. Ignore my fingers. I'm a nail biter.

Anyway, I made a bunch of tiny snowflakes :)

So there's my first few days of a temperature blanket! I'll update every week or so.

Are you making one? Have you made one before? Leave a pic in the comments! I'd love to see your work!!
